Majority of online retailers already use social media

A new report by the e-tailing group and PowerReviews shows that the majority of US-based online retailers are already engaged in social media. We anticipate that a similar scenario exists in the UK market.

The report found that:

  • 86% have a Facebook fan page
  • 65% use Twitter
  • 55% use blogs
  • 36% are monitoring social media channels

These figures in themselves are very high but of equal importance was the number of e-commerce sites that planned to launch into social media and the report found that within the next 12 months:

  • 10% would launch Facebook
  • 19% would launch Twitter
  • 25% would launch blogs
  • 31% would start monitoring social media

Fear – the main block to social media

Findings from the report also showed that the greatest worry for online retailers was that they felt that they did not have the skills to manage their social media interaction. Social media optimisation is recognised as a means for companies to start their social media engagement as it draws on external experts who can build social media campaigns.   All retailers recognised the importance of social media as a marketing channel and the need to launch into social media was globally recognised.   Social media is seen as the best way to engage customers and build brand loyalty. Social media’s biggest attraction was the scope for word-of-mouth viral marketing, customer feedback and customer reviews.

Social media – avoidance is not an option

It is generally accepted that ignoring social media is not an option. Social media optimisation (SMO) is a required process as brands, companies and their products are already being spoken about in social media channels.   Here at The WebMarketing Group, we are right on the case. We are having great success with clients who have decided to start social media optimisation and can help you identify which social media channels and audiences best fit for you.
